Stateless is Chiara Wettmann's first book. It looks at the realities of statelessness in Lebanon and Syria, and at the mechanisms that perpetuate it: discriminatory nationality laws, forced displacement and decades of exclusion.
Developed over five years in close collaboration with its protagonists, Stateless weaves personal stories into the political and historical structures of statelessness. It brings together photographs, interview excerpts, video stills and texts to draw a multifaceted, striking portrait of a reality that remains largely unknown.
Chiara Wettmann (b. 1993) is a documentary photographer based between Berlin and Beirut. Her work explores the intersections of human rights, power structures and historical legacies. In 2025, she was selected for the World Press Photo Foundation's Joop Swart Masterclass.
