SPIRALS is a photographic investigation into the forced sterilisation of Greenlandic women by the Danish government between 1966 and 1975. Combining investigation, documentary and visual art, the French photographer gives a powerful voice to victims who were held in leaden silence for many years.
JULIETTE PAVY — A documentary photographer, graduate of the photojournalism programme at EMI CFD in Paris, she works regularly with the French national press including Le Monde, Libération, Le Figaro and Mediapart. Alongside this, she develops a documentary approach to photography on environmental and social subjects, mainly in the Arctic.
In 2020 she co-founded the Collectif Hors Format and was selected for the Kickstarter x Polka open call. In 2022 she was awarded the Grande commande nationale of the BnF and the French Ministry of Culture. The following year she received the prize of the Union des Photographes Professionnels (UPP) and the Françoise Demulder grant from Visa pour l’Image for her reportage on the forced sterilisation of Greenlandic women. Her work has been exhibited and screened at festivals such as L’Oeil Urbain, Visa pour l’Image, Escales Photos and Les Femmes s’exposent.
In 2024 she was named Photographer of the Year at the Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA).
