RETOMADA means “reclaiming”, or “taking back”. It is a struggle that human rights defenders Renaud Philippe (Canadian photographer) and Carol Mira (Brazilian anthropologist) have been documenting since January 2022. This 216-page book, made of photographs and words gathered on the ground, tells of the beauty, the poetry and the resilience of the Guarani people, and of their fight to recover their land from agribusiness in a region of Brazil where monoculture stretches to the horizon.

RENAUD PHILIPPE is based in Quebec City and has nearly 20 years of experience in documentary photography. His independent work looks at the long-term consequences of armed conflict and climate disruption on populations. His humanist reportage has been exhibited worldwide and published in the New York Times, the Globe and Mail and National Geographic.

CAROL MIRA is a Brazilian visual anthropologist and filmmaker specialising in audiovisual work and human rights. With more than 15 years of collaborative projects with Indigenous and peripheral communities, she is committed to participatory cinema as a tool of resistance. From a decolonial standpoint, her work addresses human and territorial rights, the reclaiming of territories and cultural diasporas, fostering intercultural dialogue through education, research and audiovisual production.
