Efendim — In Turkish, a courtesy title given to a notable, a master or a lord. Today it simply means “sir”.

Following in his father’s footsteps, the photographer documents the city of Istanbul in a series of richly and precisely composed images. Made over several years, the book is a tribute to the city and explores the themes of childhood and memory.

Pierre Belhassen is a French photographer-author based in Marseille, known for his eye for the image, for composition and for colour, with a style entirely his own.

His work has been published in M Magazine for Leica Photography, Le Monde, Le Courrier international, LFI Magazine, Better Photography, Epic Stories and Frankfurter Allgemeine. His photographs were shown at Voies Off Arles in 2016 and at the FotoIstanbul festival in 2015. He won the LensCulture Street Photography Awards 2016 and the Miami Street Photography Festival 2019.
