PARIAS is the first conflict-zone reportage by photographer Yegan Mazandarani, shot in Ukraine, specifically in the Donbas region.
This field journal from the DPR (Donetsk People’s Republic — a contested Ukrainian territory) offers a humble and humanistic perspective on war, its trenches, its people, whether civilians or soldiers ; the “Pariahs.”
The project has been widely featured in the press and published in French, English, and Russian.
The book features over 100 black-and-white medium-format film photographs, along with in-depth field notes and interviews conducted by the author on location.
YEGAN MAZANDARANI — “Since 2014, Ukraine has been at war.
At Europe’s doorstep, in the Donbas, new trenches have been dug, echoing those once occupied by the Poilus a century ago.
For my first reportage in a war zone, I wanted to see for myself what war really was. With humility, faced with a situation far greater than me, I simply sought to observe with a gentle gaze to understand, to photograph, and to listen.”
Yegan Mazandarani is a photographer, photo editor at Magnum Photos, and co-founder of Four Eyes Editions.
